On Oct. 29, there were 30 Connecticut cities and towns with the highest daily averages of newly reported COVID-19 cases, according to the state’s virus data tracker.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, there were 67 red communities in the red.

Red communities are so-called due to the state’s color-coded map of average daily COVID-19 cases. Red communities are reporting 4-15 or more cases per 100,000 residents.

The announcement that 42 new communities are now considered to be high-risk for spreading the virus comes the night before Connecticut is set to roll back its economic reopening.

In Connecticut, like many other states, COVID-19 is surging due to decreased economic restrictions, the return of students to classrooms in September, and what some refer to as people dropping their vigilance. Neighboring Massachusetts is instituting a 9:30/10 p.m. statewide curfew starting Friday, Nov. 6 at midnight to stem the virus’s spread.

SOME GOOD NEWS

Meanwhile, there is a bit of good news: 12 Connecticut communities where the average daily infection rate has gone down. In 5 of the communities, it declined enough to the point that the municipality is no longer in the red.

The 5 communities that are no longer on the red list are Canterbury, Cromwell, Lisbon, New London, and Old Saybrook.

The other 7 communities where the rate decreased, but they’re still in the red, are Ellington, Griswold, Montville, North Canaan, Norwich, Plainfield, and Waterford.

The following is a list of red communities in Connecticut as of Thursday, Oct. 29, and their corresponding average daily rates. If a town was on the red list last week, the Oct. 22 rate is given as well in parentheses (). Newly added communities are in CAPS. Communities, where the rate increased from last week, are in bold:
